The Arizona Trail Association recently kicked off a massive undertaking near the town of Patagonia to reroute 32 miles of the Arizona Trail to avoid paved and dirt roads by constructing a safe, scenic path for all non-motorized trail users.
The Temporal Gulch Reroute Project has been divided into four main phases. Phase 1 is the southernmost portion of the reroute, which includes 6.4 miles of trail construction on the Sierra Vista Ranger District.
This first phase is halfway completed, and because of a generous donation from the Southern Arizona Hiking Club in honor of late members and AZT lovers Jack and Alice Olson, the remainder will be finished as soon as the summer heat wanes.
